Mobile Blasting vs. Workshop Blasting: Which is Right for Your Project?

As a team of blasters, we find it important to offer two distinct services as part of our blasting specialities: workshop blasting and mobile blasting. These are generally similar, but there are a few key differences that make each one more suitable for given projects.

The best way to understand which approach is right for your project is to reach out and chat with us. That said, we wanted to provide a simple framework to help you decide whether mobile or workshop blasting would be best for you.

Read on for a quick, easy breakdown of our local sandblasting services in Hamilton, comparing mobile blasting vs workshop blasting across cost, convenience, surface type, and site access.

The Fundamentals of Mobile Blasting vs Workshop Blasting

The difference between these two blasting methods is essentially what it sounds like: it’s all about where the work takes place.

Workshop blasting happens right here on home turf, at our local Hamilton facility. This is where we have dedicated blast rooms and cabinets designed to contain abrasive media (you might know it as ‘grit’ or ‘sand’). Since this is our permanent setup, we can usually recover and recycle the material we’ve used to clean your surfaces fairly easily. It’s also the ideal environment for precision work, where we need to control as many variables as possible. Not to mention, it’s off-site, so our clients run very little risk of their workspaces being disrupted while we work.

On the other hand, if you opt for mobile sandblasting services, we’re bringing the blasting equipment to you! We have specialised mobile blasting rigs that can easily accommodate heavy-duty compressors and blasting units, along with the relevant PPE and other control measures for this hazardous work.

We come to your site in this rig, whether you need help on a farm, in a commercial construction zone, or even on a residential driveway. If the surface or machinery that you need blasted is immovable, then a mobile blasting rig is a no-brainer for the job. This is for all of the things that just won’t fit on the back of a truck (or which risk being damaged too much in the move).

As you can see, these two options are applicable in different situations, so you might already have a good idea of where your project falls on the mobile blasting vs workshop blasting spectrum. But let’s take a closer look.

Mobile Blasting vs. Workshop Blasting: Head-to-Head

To help you narrow your choice, we’ve broken the decision down into four categories that usually dictate a project’s direction: cost, convenience, surface type, and site access.

1. Cost.

Generally speaking, workshop blasting is the more cost-effective option for smaller or portable items. Because we don’t have to factor in travel time, equipment transport, or the extensive onsite setup and cleanup required for mobile work, the per-item price is usually lower.

Mobile sandblasting services involve more logistics. We have to ensure we have enough media on hand, set up protective barriers to keep dust away from neighbouring properties, and manage the cleanup of the grit once we’re finished. We offer this service for a reason (it’s often the only way to do large-scale onsite work), but the overhead can be reflected in the price.

2. Convenience.

Convenience is subjective. If you have a set of car rims or an old iron bed frame, the most convenient option is often to drop them off at our workshop and pick them up when they’re finished. You don’t have to worry about the noise or the mess at your own place.

However, if you’re looking to strip a 10-tonne excavator or prep a concrete tilt-slab building, the convenience of mobile blasting is unmatched. We save you the massive headache (and expense) of hiring heavy transport to move your assets. We show up, do the job, and you can get straight back to work.

3. Surface type.

Next, let’s talk about surfaces. This is one of the first things we’ll ask about as we go down the checklist for hiring mobile blasting, since surface plays a big role in the outcome.

If we’re in our onsite workshop in Hamilton, we have the luxury of switching between different abrasive media very quickly. We can dial in the perfect regimen for whichever surface you bring us, from heavy industrial parts to delicate vintage antiques.

Mobile sandblasting services, on the other hand, are generally reserved for larger, tougher surfaces that can withstand some punishment. These are the spots where we focus on removing rust, paint, and grime. Of course, we can still be precise with our mobile units and provide an excellent service, especially if we’re tackling our speciality: on-site machinery blasting and coating.

That said, if you have the option to bring it along, we recommend an in-house blasting at our facility for maximum flexibility.

4. Site access.

Finally, this is a big one for anyone looking at mobile sandblasting services. Before we head out, we usually run through a quick checklist for hiring mobile blasting to see if the site is suitable. We need to consider a few things, including how easily our rig can access the work area, if there are any noise limits (blasting can get noisy), and how well we can contain the work area to prevent dust contamination throughout the rest of your facility.

In our workshop, we’ve already managed these factors. On your site, we’ll need to confirm everything is suitable and make a plan with you to sequester the work area for the duration of the blasting.

In the end, the comparison between mobile blasting vs workshop blasting boils down to a simple question: can you move it easily?

If it can be easily transported on a trailer or in the back of a truck, then workshop blasting is almost always the right choice. It’s faster, cleaner, and more affordable. But if your surface is part of a building, a large piece of heavy equipment, or a fixed structure, then mobile blasting is your go-to.

Not sure whether mobile blasting vs workshop blasting is right for you?

Every project has its own quirks, so the best thing to do if you’re unsure is to reach out and have a chat with our blasting specialists! We’ll help you to figure out which of our workshops or mobile blasting services is best for you.
